So you bought a ROV? What to do with it?

ROVs and AUVs, Remotely Operated Vehicles and Autonomous Underwater Vehicles, have been around for decades. At first they were mainly used for different underwater tasks like locating shipwrecks or UXO’s (Unexploded ordnances), where it would have been too risky to use divers. As the technology develops and the equipment get smaller and cheaper, the use of ROVs has multiplied in marine and oil & gas operations as well as scientific and hobby use.

Nowadays it is fairly common for e.g. ports to own a ROV, which can be equipped with a sonar, camera or thickness gauge for underwater check-ups. And all the time more asset owners are interested in buying one. ROV’s, as well as divers, are great in taking close-up pictures or samples from exact areas where it’s known to be damage or other interesting observation. It is challenging, though, to get the exact location or bigger overall picture using only ROV. That is why you need a drive-by inspection to get visual 3D data of all of your assets and adjacent seabed.

How I get the best out of my ROV?

With ROV it is easy to do quick check-up, as the equipment is in your own machinery hall and it’s easy-to-use for your personnel, so you don’t need to call a survey or diving company.  Let’s say you have done a comprehensive underwater survey for your assets and the 3D data is easily available in online service.  And let’s say that there has been a collision on the quay or some object near the seaway. You can quickly put your ROV into work, take pictures of the damage or object and upload those pictures into 3D model with correct coordinates. If you want to know if the damage or e.g. erosion is developing, you can do monitoring and save all the pictures into the online service within the same remark. All the necessary information for enlightened maintenance decisions can be found easily. The synergy comes from realising the advantages of both technologies and using them hand in hand in everyday maintenance.

The benefits
  • Specific coordinates in 3D model guide your ROV straight to the interesting location for close-up pictures -save time from trying to find the spot
  • Do regular check-ups of specific areas and save the data in GISGRO -save time by storing all the information in one place
  • Monitor the changes to do maintenance operations in the right time -save money from unnecessary repairs or unexpected incidents.
